Shavuot

Shavuot is a Hebrew word meaning "weeks" and is also the Jewish festival marking the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai.  Like so many other Jewish holidays, Shavuot began as an ancient agricultural festival, marking the end of the spring barley harvest and the beginning of the summer wheat harvest.  It was distinguished in ancient times by bringing crop offerings to the Temple in Jerusalem.

At Temple Israel, after our Shavuot worship service, we continue the holiday tradition of serving dairy dishes to symbolize the sweetness of the Torah as well as the "land of milk and honey".  Our congregants always enjoy the dazzling spread of assorted cheesecakes as we celebrate together.
